Edin Dzeko to play for Manchester City against Wolves?
Roberto Mancini greeted the £27million arrival of Edin Dzeko from Wolfsburg by boasting Manchester City are in possession of among the finest strike forces in Europe.
The Bosnian has signed up with Carlos Tevez, Mario Balotelli, David Silva and Adam Johnson in a shimmering choice of fire power, that could yet catapult City to the Barclays Premier League Championship this year.
Unquestionably, the utter power of the Blues’ lineup of frontmen exceeds each of their domestic challengers, and Mancini has yet to determine if he’ll be releasing Emmanuel Adebayor in the transfer window.
“With the other strikers, we can now have one of the best attacks in Europe,” said Mancini.
“We want to build a better team and we have bought a good forward.
“Edin is a young player. He has a good mentality.
“I followed him for two years and now he is one of the best strikers in Europe.”
It was assumed Dzeko’s introduction would result in the immediate discharge of both Roque Santa Cruz and Adebayor, who has not made any secret of his misery at being disregarded so frequently.
But, while Santa Cruz will depart Eastlands with Mancini’s blessing and full-back Wayne Bridge is on the brink of signing up for West Ham on loan, the situation with Adebayor is a bit more perplexing, with a conclusion around the Togo striker’s future not due to be made until the end of the week.
“For Roque it is possible,” explained Mancini. “He is a good guy and he deserves to play.
“But with Emmanuel I don’t know. We must wait and see.”
Mancini is keen to not pigeon-hole Dzeko as a target man for City to hit balls up to. Dzeko demonstrated his skills against Manchester United last season when he scored goals in two get togethers with Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.
And Mancini senses he provides much more than just one particular solution.
“It will allow me to play a different system but he can play in quite a few,” said Mancini. “He has many qualities and a good attitude.
“He is a strong player, who has experience, even though he is only young.
“This is important because it means he can play at a big team with all the other players.”
Mancini initially attempted to determine whether Dzeko might be tempted from Germany last summer. Although the interest was reciprocated from the player, Wolfsburg turned out to be somewhat harder to deal with.
Even so, as a challenging season under new manager Steve McClaren unfolded, the former champions’ opposition wilted, enabling the 24-year-old to become what is likely to be City’s only signing of the exchange window.
“We are already in a good position in the league,” said Mancini. “With a player like him we can improve in this competition and also the Europa League.
“Now we have a good mix of forwards.
“Dzeko scored a lot of goals in Germany and I am sure he can continue that here.
“I realise the Premier League is different from the other leagues, but if a striker scores goals in Germany or Italy, he can also get them in England.”
Dzeko will likely be readily available for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Wolves at Eastlands.
However, as City have to undertake an FA Cup third-round replay with Leicester and then embark on a trip to Birmingham, it is in no way sure that Dzeko will begin against Mick McCarthy’s side, particularly as it’s a month since his previous game.
“It is possible he could play against Wolves,” said Mancini.
“He has just come from the mid-season break in Germany but he is in good shape.
“But we have three games in a week, so he will have a chance to play at some point.”
