Beckham training at Spurs, but will he play?
Although David Beckham hasn’t been given permission by his club to play for Tottenham Hotspur, his four weeks training started today, when he underwent a medical at the training ground.
The LA Galaxy midfielder, 35, checked in at the club’s training venue in Chigwell, Essex, and had no time for the assembled media.
Beckham will undergo a fitness test today as he seeks not just to stay in shape during the Major League Soccer close season, but also catch the eye of England coach, Fabio Capello, for whom he has always declared his availability.
Becks has four weeks of British training at Spurs, starting tomorrow and finishing on February 10 whereafter he will return to Los Angeles for their pre-season.
Although Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp had hoped for a short-term loan deal, LA Galaxy were understood to demand too much money, and the Spurs board vetoed the move. Moreover, Galaxy management had expressed concern about Backham playing in competitive matches after he tore his Achilles tendon whilst playing under a similar deal at AC Milan this time last season.
Redknapp is still hopeful of watching Beckham play for Spurs, however, with negotiations ongoing about a possible loan deal.
Beckham last played in English club football for Manchester United on the final day of the 2002-03 season.
