Adebayor loaned to Spurs

Tottenham have agreed a loan deal to sign ex-Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor from Manchester City.

The former Arsenal striker will spend the rest of the campaign on loan at White Hart Lane after City agreed to pay some of his £170,000-a-week wages, although it is understood he is taking a pay cut to make sure the deal goes through.

Adebayor had a terrible spell at City

Adebayor will be on the front foot when he arrives, given he is vilified by Arsenal fans following his acrimonious exit from the Emirates and subsequent antics while playing for City against the Gunners when he charged the length of the pitch to celebrate a goal.

Redknapp feels Arsenal fans’ loathing of the player will stand him in good stead with Spurs supporters, but has warned Adebayor that he will be judged on his performances.

Adebayor struggled to make an impression after leaving Arsenal to join City for £25million in 2009 and spent the second half of last season on loan at Real Madrid.

It is understood that, should a deal be sealed this week, the terms of the loan would forbid Adebayor from playing his parent club when the two sides meet at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

In his four years at Tottenham’s local rivals Arsenal, Adebayor scored five goals in North London derbies.

Adebayor’s move may prompt the exit of Tottenham’s Peter Crouch, with Queens Park Rangers and Fulham both interested in the England international.

Redknapp has also admitted he would have no qualms about bringing the out-of-favour midfielder Joe Cole to north London.

The playmaker could be available for as little as £3million as the Reds board are desperate to get his £100,000-a-week wages off the books, and it’s believed Cole is willing to take a pay cut to end his Anfield misery.

Tottenham were leading the race for Cole’s signature last summer, when he was a free agent after leaving Chelsea, but the Lilywhites missed out on the 29-year-old as Roy Hodgson swooped and took him to Anfield.

Twelve months on, Cole’s Liverpool future is in doubt, following a disappointing debut season on Merseyside, and the recent arrivals of Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam – and Redknapp concedes that he could move for Cole again in the final week of the transfer window.

Meanwhile, Lassana Diarra’s proposed £9.5million switch from Real Madrid has been delayed because Tottenham are not keen for a sell-on clause to be included in the contract.
